What Vinyl Wrap Delamination Means and Why It Happens
Delamination is what happens when vinyl wrap loses its bond with the surface underneath it, and it isn’t limited to kitchen cabinet doors.
The same fault can turn up on wrapped worktops, wardrobe fronts and commercial counters too. That fault has clear, well-understood causes, so here is why they happen and what stops it happening in the first place.
What delamination is – Guide by professional kitchen wrappers
Vinyl wrap is built from layers: the coloured or textured film on top, an adhesive layer beneath it, and the surface it’s bonded to underneath that.
That middle layer is doing all the heavy lifting work, and delamination happens once it loses its grip and the film starts to pull away.
That separation almost always starts small, at an edge or a corner, because edges are where the adhesive has the least surface area to hold onto.
Once air or moisture gets into that gap, the bond weakens further and the lifted area spreads.

Where it usually starts, and why preparation matters most
Of everything that can cause delamination, poor surface preparation before the wrap goes on is the biggest single factor.
A surface that hasn’t been properly cleaned, degreased and sanded leaves contamination behind that stops proper adhesion. The film sits on top rather than truly bonding to what’s underneath.
Self-adhesive film applied without proper heat-forming around corners and edges fails first.
Cold-applied film stays under tension at every fold, and that stored tension pulls it away from the surface within months, not years.
We heat-form every corner during installation so the vinyl sits relaxed instead of stretched, and a relaxed edge holds its seal for years where a stretched one won’t.
Heat, moisture and sunlight play a supporting role
Once preparation and application are sound, the remaining causes are environmental, and they wear a bond down gradually over years of ordinary use.
Repeated heat cycles near an oven or hob can soften adhesive over time.
Standing water at a sink or splashback edge does the same if it’s left to sit rather than wiped away.
Direct sunlight through an unshaded window has a similar effect on commercial surfaces such as reception desks and window sills, where UV exposure gradually breaks down adhesive bonds that heat and moisture don’t reach.
None of these factors cause failure on their own within a normal lifespan. They add to a bond that was already weaker than it should have been.
Where we can help against delamination
That’s the difference a quality wrap makes.
With a genuine, well-made wrap, none of that is enough to cause a problem within Wrap Wizard’s length guarantee period.
Our Signature Range uses 150 to 250 micron film backed by a 7-year guarantee, built to handle busier kitchens and the daily heat and moisture that come with cooking and washing up.
The Luxury Range steps up to 200 to 370 micron film with a 10 to 12 year guarantee. It is our strongest option for spaces that take the most punishment, whether that’s a kitchen beside the oven or a reception desk sitting in direct sun all day.
Both ranges are covered against delamination, so if heat, moisture or sunlight ever do get the better of the bond, you’re covered.
That’s what separates a professional wrap from a DIY job with no comeback if it lifts.

The early signs worth catching
A small lift at a seam or corner is the first visible sign, often before it’s obvious enough to worry about.
Left alone, moisture works into that gap and the lifted section grows, eventually spreading far enough to spot from across the room, not just up close.
Catching a lifted corner early keeps the repair small, because a wrap that’s holding everywhere except one spot is a different job to one that’s failing across an entire panel.
But if your wrap is heading towards the end of its natural lifecycle, a full rewrap is usually the better call.
Wrap Wizard will always tell you honestly which one you’re looking at.
Repair or rewrap, depending on how far it’s spread
A single lifted corner is usually a straightforward repair. The affected area gets cleaned out, re-adhered and resealed, and the rest of the wrap carries on as completely normal.
But once delamination has spread across a full panel, or shown up in more than one spot on the same door, patching stops making sense and a full rewrap of that section becomes the better option.
One of our trusted installers can tell you which category a given fault falls into just by looking at how far it’s travelled.
Frequently asked questions about delamination
What should I do if my vinyl wrap is peeling?
Stop touching or picking at the lifted edge, since that tends to make the gap bigger. Get it looked at while it’s still small enough for a localised repair, before it turns into a full section replacement.
How long should a professional wrap last without lifting?
A correctly applied wrap on a well-prepared surface should hold for several years under normal kitchen or commercial use, well beyond what budget self-adhesive film typically manages.
What are the most common vinyl wrap problems?
Edge lifting from poor preparation, bubbling from trapped air or moisture, and premature fading from prolonged UV exposure account for most of the issues that come up.
Can a peeling wrap be fixed without a full rewrap?
Usually, yes, if it’s caught early. Small, localised lifting can be re-adhered without touching the rest of the panel. Only widespread delamination calls for a full rewrap of that surface.
